The sixties saw a style of clothing that was unique to the time period.
Teens and even some adults started to wear bell bottoms and tied dyed t-shirts.
On college campuses and in all sorts of neighbors this clothing was a sign
that you were part of the drop in generation. This clothing that has come
to be a symbol of the make love not war sixties decade is commonly referred
to as hippie clothing and it took the nation and a generation by storm.
Hippie clothing was simple for the men a tie-died t-shirt and bell bottoms
was accented by a leather head band and a fringed vest. There was no problem
with shoes because most of the time men and woman didn't wear them. Often
the men wore a big peace sign around their necks to symbolize that they
were not into war.
Hippie cloth for the women was similar to the men but their bell bottoms
were hip huggers that were fringed at the bottom. The women's shirt of
choice was not tie-dyed by was usually just a halter top. Hippie clothing
for the women was usually accented by flowers in the hair. Sometimes the
women would also wear ankle bells.
Hippie clothing was a way for the teens and young adults to set themselves
apart from establishment. The establishment was simply anyone that did
not agree with the hippie view point. The hippies wanted everyone to know
that they were in disagreement with the establishment so they decided to
set themselves apart by developing their own hippie clothing.
Hippie clothing has never really gone out of style. It resurfaces every
so often or once in awhile you may see a hippie who is still
reliving his or her tie-dyed t-shirt and instead of the trademark bell
bottom the pants of choice for hippies now ahs become the blue jeans.
