Hawaiian clothing is all about comfort and color. Style and fads play
second fiddle to the feel of the clothing and the comfort level it creates.
Most Hawaiians are accustomed to casual “aloha” clothing. This consists
of shorts, light shirts and rubber soled shoes. Hawaii has a balmy climate
and the average tourist will welcome the change in dress code. So if you
visit Hawaii don't over pack because you will not need it. Pack light and
ask others who have been there what would be the perfect items to keep
you comfortable.
Dressing up is not something that is in the everyday native Hawaiians
vocabulary. There is no need to pack an evening dress unless you plan on
attending an event that specifically calls for it. If you do need one then
try to stick to the fabric guidelines listed so that you can avoid being
uncomfortable and standing out like a new comer. A man in a suit and tie
is either working or going to court in the eyes of the natives. Most tourists
think of the hula skirts and flip flops when thinking about Hawaii. Although
these are signatures of Hawaii this is not the norm. When visiting Hawaii
you will want to throw out old myths and stick to natural fabrics and cotton
blends. Fabrics and designs that are created to keep you cool and comfy
are the best choices. Also a helpful hint is to stick to clothing that
is easy to wash and care for. Choose lightweight and easy mix and match
pieces. This will make your Hawaiian clothing so much more enjoyable.
Just because Hawaiian clothing is simple does not mean it's not fashionable.
Some designers have taken the ideas of Hawaiian clothing to
places such as New York to try a duplicate the styles and fabrics. Hawaiian
clothing has flare and color. The simplicity makes it that much more appealing.
